JB Bus Guide: Getting to IKEA, AEON Mall Tebrau City & Toppen in Taman Desa Tebrau

IKEA Tebrau, located in Taman Desa Tebrau of Johor Bahru, is opposite AEON Mall Tebrau City and connected to the newly-opened Toppen Shopping Centre, about 14.5Km from JB CIQ. The huge outlet offers a somewhat cheaper (but not all items) alternative to IKEA outlets in Singapore. Together with Toppen, AEON Mall and Lotus's hypermarket (behind AEON Mall), they formed another shoppers’ heaven.

It is easier to get to IKEA Tebrau via Woodlands Checkpoint (a.k.a. 1st Link) from Singapore. After crossing the border, use public bus services to get there from JB Sentral without having to drive. Alternatively, use Grab but will require mobile data.

Travelling by Public Buses

The newly-incorporated myBAS T14 operates from the bus terminal below JB Sentral at Bus Bay 4 directly to Toppen Shopping Centre. The bus service will terminate at Toppen / IKEA. IKEA Tebrau is right beside Toppen and AEON Mall Tebrau City is accessible via an overhead bridge. The maximum fare is RM2.30.

However, do note that myBAS T14 operates two sessions a day: 4:50am~10:50am in the morning and 3:50pm~9:50pm in the late afternoon / evening. In the morning session, first bus from JB Sentral is at 6:10am and last bus is at 10:50am (Evening: first bus at 5:10pm and last at 9:50pm).

Returning from Toppen / IKEA to JB Sentral — for day-trippers from Singapore — the applicable session is in the late afternoon / evening time. The first bus will be at 3:50pm and last at 8:30pm.

Service frequency is 40 minutes in each direction.

Wait at the bus stop outside IKEA, instead of Toppen, for myBAS T14 to JB Sentral. You can also drop-off along Tebrau Highway to Taman Sentosa, Taman Sri Tebrau, KSL City Mall or Plaza Pelangi.

Alternatively, or outside of myBAS T14's operating time, take myBAS T10 from JB Sentral Bus Bay 11 or from Larkin Sentral to AEON Mall Tebrau City. The service will depart from JB Sentral, make a short stop at Larkin Sentral and then continue towards Kota Tinggi.

Alight at the bus stop for AEON Mall along the highway and walk to IKEA or the other shopping joints. The fare from JB Sentral to AEON Mall should be around RM2.70 and the journey will take around an hour.

Use this map to find the locations of the bus-stops and paths to the shopping joints.

Travelling by Grab Service

Taking Grab's cab service may be a better option in terms of flexibility in timing and also saving the hassle of using buses, especially after buying some stuffs. The fare to Taman Desa Tebrau should be around RM15 from JB Sentral and RM21 coming back (prices will vary depending on availability of drivers and surcharges during peak hours).

Local taxis (unmetered) will be around RM20-25 from the taxi booth below JB Sentral — the fare charged by the booth is fixed. However, coming back may be more than RM35 as it will be up to the taxi drivers to charge. In Malaysia, taxi drivers are known to rip-off Singaporeans, foreigners and even locals who look well-off.

* Fares quoted are in 2018 and based on personal experience — this is why I don't use local taxis when travelling in Malaysia.
