Singapore Eat: Teochew Meat Puff (潮州香饼) @ ?? Pasar Malam

PS: The photos in this post were taken before COVID and I have not been able to chance upon the stall since then. I will update these photos when I have the chance to catch them again.

Teochew Meat Puff (潮州香饼) is a roving food stall — it will not stay foot in one place. The stall is usually found in pasar malams (or night markets) that pops up around Singapore now and then, but the question is always "at which pasar malam now?".

Teochew Meat Puff stall serves Teochew meat puffs (or oyster puffs) as the stall's name implied directly. The traditional snack originates from Fuzhou, China, and is a popular snack in the eastern region of China, including the islands of Taiwan.

By the way, queueing for the meat puffs at Teochew Meat Puff can take up to an hour or more.

There are several flavours of the meat puffs, such as the traditional oyster-pork (耗猪肉), prawn-pork (虾猪肉), octopus-pork (章鱼猪肉), crab-pork (蟹猪肉) and scallion-pork (扇贝猪肉). Other fried stuffs are also available. The meat puffs are made and deep-fried on order. Each puff used to be priced around $3 to $3.50 some times back, but are currently around $4.50 to $5 per piece (as on 16 Sep 2023).

The deep-fried meat puff has crispy crust with crunchy peanuts on it. Each puff is about the size of my palm.

The original oyster-pork puff contains fresh oysters and minced pork with shreds of vegetable. It is a crispy tasty snack and not too salty — I would have tried more if I had more stomach space after eating one puff and queue for another hour again.

Wait for the hot snack to cool off a little before sinking your teeth into it!

The only way to get the current or next whereabout of Teochew Meat Puff is via their Facebook (see below) — or chance upon it when it pops up in a night market in your neighbourhood.
