Singapore Buy: Rich Lapis Kek Lapis @ Bukit Batok

Writer's picture: RickRick

Rich Lapis is a bakery-shop in Bukit Batok that bakes and sells traditional kek lapis (千层糕), an Indonesian layer cake. The pastry is also known as "kueh lapis legit" in Indonesia — but I prefer not to call it "kueh lapis" as it can be confused with layered Nyonya kueh in Singapore and Malaysia.

When Rich Lapis bakes their kek lapis, and other cakes, the shop will be filled with aroma of the baked cakes. Other than cakes, Rich Lapis baked a number of traditional Chinese pastries, cookies and breads too.

Rich Lapis has 3 flavours of kek lapis: original, pandan and with prunes (pre-orders only). The original kek lapis is moist and has a smooth buttery flavour and not too sweet. I prefer kek lapis that are less sweet as most kueh lapis legit — "legit" means "sweet" in Indonesian language — tends to be on the sweeter side.

The pandan kek lapis is similarly mild-sweet, moist and with light buttery-pandan flavour. With low sweetness, I can go for two or more pieces a time instead of stopping after 1 piece.

Aside from kek lapis, Rich Lapis’s kaya puff is pretty big in size as compared to others. The puff has flaky layered crust and is stuffed with thick green pandan kaya. Despite the large amount of kaya, the puff is mild-sweet and the layered crust has buttery flavour. This is nice too.

Other than Malay / Nyonya kueh, cakes and Chinese pastries that I discovered in Bukit Batok, Rich Lapis, and its Southeast Asian pastries, is a surprise find so near to my place.
