Pontian Eats: Pontian Lau Pasar (笨珍老巴刹) @ Pontian Kechil

Pontian Lau Pasar (笨珍老巴刹), translated as "Pontian Old Market", is a food centre with food stalls rather than a local market. The stalls will usually open after 4pm. The food centre is located in the heart of Kampung Atap and very close to Kedai Mee Sin Kee (新記笨珍雲吞麵), which is well-known for its Pontian wanton noodle.

Pontian Lau Pasar (笨珍老巴刹) @ Pontian

Pontian Lau Pasar, despite its name, is not old at all. It has been renovated with clean tiled floor, new tables and ample lightings to give a clean environment for dining. Most of the food stalls will open on weekends and some will take a break for a day or two on weekdays. Nevertheless, there will still be some stalls opened on weekdays to serve evening dining crowds.

Pontian Lau Pasar (笨珍老巴刹): The environment

Pontian Lau Pasar is one of the best spots to go for cheap local food at night. I have dined at the food centre few times.

The Ikan Bakar stall (老巴刹小玫瑰铁板烧鱼), serves grilled fish, sotongs (squids) and set meals with either of them. The grilled fish rice set comes with a fried egg, dried shrimps sambal (hae bi hiam) ladyfingers and spicy grilled stingray. The crispy sambal, its aroma and just-right spiciness, turns this simple dish into a delicious meal.

From the Chee Cheong Fun & Assam Fish (老巴刹猪肠粉.亚参鱼) stall, its chee cheong fun looks paler in colour and more compact but it has a nice chewy texture in a delightful sweet sauce with white sesame seeds. The chee cheong fun can be accompanied by side dishes, such as fish sticks, sio mai, etc, to complete a meal.

The oyster omelette, from the Oyster (老巴刹蚝煎) stall, has big and fresh oysters fried with eggs and tapioca flour with minced garlic. The garlicky aroma and flavour makes the oyster omelette a tasty dish to try.

Other than the few dishes highlighted above, Pontian Lau Pasar has a lot more food to offer, such as chicken rice, satays, wanton noodle, prawn mee, fried carrot cake, etc. These food will have local flavours and something different from what we are used to.
