Muar Eat: Sam Kee Kopitiam (山记咖啡) @ Taman Sri Tanjung

Sam Kee Kopitiam (山记咖啡) is a little cafe located in Taman Sri Tanjung, near the western edge of Pekan Muar, not far from Wetex Parade Hypermall. The cafe is well-known to locals and also the guests of Elite Mansion Boutique Hotel just across a road.

Sam Kee Kopitiam has an easy and relaxing vibe and gets crowded even on weekdays, especially during breakfast and coffee time. The open-air cafe operates like a coffee shop — find an empty table before ordering at the counter.

The cafe serves both espresso-based coffees and local traditional coffees — some using Kopi 434 Elephant coffee — and also tea and other beverages. For light meals, there are roti bakar (traditional toasts, buns or wholemeal bread) with a selection of different spreads, a special Roti One M bun, garlic bread, simple noodle dishes and sandwich. Typical of a Malaysia coffee shop, packets of nasi lemak and mee siam are available with sambal chilli but no ingredients — hard-boiled eggs are available at the counter.

The Elephant Bean Kopi-O (kosong) — sugar added separately — is thick with a nice aroma and non-bitter even without adding sugar — I am very familiar with the taste since it is from Kopi 434.

The small packet of mee siam, without ingredients, is surprising tasty with its sambal chilli. No wonder it is so popular with locals — same goes for the nasi lemak too. Get a hard-boiled egg as ingredient, if desired.

The corn bun, spread evenly with butter and kaya, is lightly toasted before serving. It has a crispy top crust with a nice corn aroma. Overall, the bun has a nice taste with not too much butter and kaya. The soft-boiled eggs (2 pcs) are served ready-to-eat in an ice-cream glass — just add some light soy sauce and white pepper to taste.

The wholemeal bread, spread with butter and peanut butter, is similarly lightly toasted with crispy outer crusts and retains its softness inside. The bread is nice to eat on its own but the spreads add flavours. Really nice!

The "Roti One M" is a special multi-grain bun that has black sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, wolf berries, etc, that offers multiple flavours and textures. It is also lightly toasted before serving and is a delicious bun by itself without applying any spreads — I had it kosong. This is must-try too.

For all toasted breads and buns, it will be best to finish them before they turned soft. Not recommended to take away, of course.

Sam Kee Kopitiam is a great spot for coffee and simple meals. Try their breads and buns and you will love it too.
