Wild Coriander Cafe is a popular restaurant for Peranakan food in Melaka Old Town. The restaurant is usually opened in the late afternoon till night to serve the dinner crowd. Expect it to be packed during dinner time, especially on weekends.
The restaurant has a typical Chinese-Peranakan feel and is pretty cosy. Apart from Nyonya cuisines, it also serves Malaysian delights such as nasi lemak, mee siam, rendang, etc.
The Pie Tees / Top Hats (5 pieces per set) have crispy hat-shaped pastry shells that are stuffed with turnips, carrots, bean sprouts, shredded eggs, prawns, etc. It is a popular appetiser when dining in a Peranakan restaurant.
The rice set, called "Wild Coriander Special", with beef rendang (for 2-4 persons) uses a variety of rice cooked in 4 different ways: turmeric glutinous rice, coconut-milk-flavoured nasi lemak, steamed white rice and butterfly-pea-flower-flavoured rice. The rice are served with sambal chilli, half a boiled egg, cucumber slices, pineapple slices, tomato slices, Nyonya picked vegetables and beef rendang. Eating this dish is like trying 4 rice dishes with different taste experience.
The lamb shank (for 2-4 person) is pretty meaty and served in a special sauce — tastes similar to rendang but not quite the same. The mutton is very tender, tasty and not too savoury. This is my favourite, of course.
The Udang Masak Lemak Nenas (prawn pineapple, for 2-4 persons) is a prawn curry dish where prawns and cuts of pineapple are cooked in creamy coconut milk with spices. Fresh prawns with delightful flavours of the Nyonya curry and acidity of pineapple makes this sweet-sour-spicy dish another must-try.
Wild Coriander's Nyonya dishes are nice-tasting and is one great option for Peranakan food in Melaka Old Town.
