Malacca Eat: Poh Piah Lwee (香薄饼食家) Hokkien Popiah @ Melaka Old Town

Poh Piah Lwee (香薄饼食家) is a small restaurant located at one end of Jonker Street of Melaka Old Town. As its name implies, Poh Piah Lwee specialises in poh piah / popiah, or spring roll, which is really special and highly recommended to try when in the old town.

There are only 5 items on Poh Piah Lwee's menu. Other than their signature popiah (香薄饼), there are Nyonya dumpling (娘惹粽), Nyonya laksa (娘惹叻沙), rojak (罗也) and minced meat & mushroom noodle (香菇肉碎面).

Popiah is fresh spring roll with its ingredients wrapped in paper-like flour crepes. The main ingredients are usually cooked turnip, beansprouts, greens, etc. The uniqueness in Poh Piah Lwee's popiah is the addition of crispy fried pork lards which makes their spring rolls tasty with some crunchiness and very different from others. It is a hot-seller of the restaurant.

The Nyonya dumpling is filled with minced pork in glutinous rice and is sweet and savoury, unlike savoury Chinese dumplings that use large pieces of fatty pork belly. Natural blue colouring. that is extracted from blue pea flowers, is added to the traditional dumpling to give it a nice fragrance. And the rice is well-cooked and soft. This is a must-try too.

Nyonya laksa is a popular Peranakan dish with a spicy kick. Poh Piah Lwee's coconut-milk-based curry laksa is added with slices of fishcake, tofu puffs, fresh cockles, etc, and extra chilli. The creamy broth is tasty and spicy — not the spiciest in Melaka Old Town — and delightful to drink.

The rojak is an uncooked dish where the ingredients (fried dough, cucumber, turnip, beansprouts, etc) are mixed thoroughly with shrimp paste, minced peanut and sugar. The dish is sweet and with strong flavours of the shrimp paste.

The minced meat & mushroom noodle is a new addition to the menu in recent years. Apart from minced meat and mushrooms on yellow noodle, there are crispy fried pork lards, slices of fishcakes, bean sprouts and garnished with spring onions. It is tasty, savoury and a non-spicy alternative to the spicy Nyonya laksa.

Poh Piah Lwee is a great place to try as many local Chinese and Nyonya delicacies in one visit.
