Located just a few steps from Jonker Street in Melaka Old Town, The Coffee JAR (呷珈琲) is one of those rustic cafes that I had visited before and has remained largely unchanged after 5 years — except for a new extension to the cafe. It has expanded to include the shop beside it.
The new space has a different decor-concept in contrast to the rusticity of the original cafe. The original cafe has smaller tables for fewer customers, whereas the new extension provides space for larger groups of customers or when it gets crowded. I prefer the original cafe for its coziness and rustic ambience that made me feel more homely.
Unfurnished walls, stone bricks, retro-style furniture and burlap sacks of coffee beans in the original cafe creates the feel of having travelled back in time to the 70's. Coffee beans used are usually self-roasted in the cafe. When roasting is taking place, the cafe will be filled with nice coffee aroma. A cassette player plays 70's, 80's and 90's oldies from cassette tapes that are still in playable conditions. The atmosphere in this rustic-feel cafe with retro musics is very different from other cafes.
The Coffee JAR serves espresso-based coffees as well as non-caffeine drinks. For refreshing drinks, they have a lemon-espresso mocktail and whiskey-espresso cocktail — interesting.
My usual cup of hot cappuccino in the morning with a chilled lemon cheese tart.
The lemon cheese tart is a nice little dessert to go with coffee. There are also dark chocolate and black sesame matcha tarts as well as cheesecakes and tiramisu.
The Coffee JAR has all the factors I need to go back again and again.
