French Brown Viennoiserie Cafe is a bakery-cum-cafe that started around end of 2022 along Jonker Walk, opposite Geographer Cafe, in Melaka Old Town. The cafe is in the same "family" — using their word — as The Stolen Cup, which is located near the other end of Jonker Walk. Both cafes have different pastries and dishes to offer.
French Brown is a pretty large cafe and very spacious. Its bakery bakes a wide range of pastries, especially croissants and various flavours of cromboloni — hailed as the "Best in Melaka". Cromboloni, also known as New York roll, is a mix of croissant and bomboloni that got popular in the 2020s.
French Brown's pastries are exquisitely-made and really pretty. I have a salted egg chicken floss yam roll and pistachio cromboloni with long black coffee. The yam roll is full of flavours from salted egg, chicken floss, yam, etc, and is nice. The pistachio cromboloni is a round croissant-pastry with flaky crust and filled with pistachio-flavour lava. It is a sweet pastry.
Other than cromboloni and pastries that are selectable at the bar counter, a wide range of main dishes, mostly French and western, and beverages are available on their thick menu.
The Caesar Salad, added-on with smoked duck, has salad tossed in Caesar sauce and topped with parmesan cheese shavings and crunchy croutons. It is great as a light dish and the thick cuts of savoury smoked duck give additional flavour punch.
The cold "purple serai" kombucha is a bottled fizzy drink with flavours of butterfly pea flower and lemongrass.
French Brown Cafe is a nice cafe to relax and chill when visiting Melaka Old Town. Its list of French-style dishes is also something different from other cafes in the old town.
