Kedai Kek Lian Pang (联邦西果屋) is a well-known traditional confectionery in Kulai District of Johor, in close proximity to Kulai Bus Terminal. The bakery has been around for over 50 years.
Lian Pang makes a wide range of cakes, including sponge cakes, butter cakes, Swiss rolls, traditional wedding cakes, etc. There are breads, buns, egg tarts and other goodies as well. It will take multiple visits to try all of them.
First time to Lian Pang, I bought their highly-recommended yuanyang cake (鸳鸯蛋糕), which has crushed peanuts and chocolate rice as toppings. Cakes with just one of the toppings are also available but yuanyang cake allows enjoyment of two flavours, or maybe three, in one cake.
The great surprise is in the cake underneath the toppings, which is very fluffy and not greasy, the amount of fresh cream is also not excessive. The cake has a light buttery taste and not too sweet. I can understand why locals highly recommend it!
Another cake that attracted my attention is their wedding cakes. These traditional cakes are getting rarer and more expensive in Singapore. It is really nostalgic to see them in Lian Pang and best of all, the cakes are not chilled, meaning they are freshly-made and I can carry them all the way back to Singapore.
Similarly, the cake is fluffy, non-greasy and not too much fresh cream, except for the decorations but the thinned base layer compensated for the excess. I will go for a full box of 10 pieces next time.
It is definitely worth the long journey to Kulai and to Lian Pang to buy these great cakes. And there are more awaiting me!
