Lau Ya Keng Foodcourt (阳春台茶室), located along Carpenter Street in Kuching Old Street and near to the Harmony Arch, is a popular eating place among locals.
The food court used to be a stage area for the Hiang Thian Siang Ti Temple (玄天上帝庙) opposite it — or maybe still is. A temple-like structure is still standing on the enclosed stage.
The food court has several stalls that sell many local dishes including Sarawak kolo mee, Sarawak laksa, kueh chap (粿汁), porridges, satays, prawn noodles, etc — I have tried two stalls so far.
1. Mui Xin Laksa (美新叻沙)
Mui Xin Laksa stall is popular for its traditional Sarawak laksa. Other than serving its normal Sarawak laksa, it has "Special Laksa" (with chicken thigh) and "Special Seafood Mix" (with mix of various seafood).
The Sarawak Special Laksa comes with chicken thigh meat in mellow Sarawak-style laksa broth with fresh prawns and shredded eggs. Add in some lime juice and sambal chilli to further enhance the flavours of the noodle dish and make it more delicious. No wonder it is so popular.
Opening Hours:
7am to 10pm | Daily
2. Tan's Signature (陈记特色虾面)
Tan's Signature sells various noodle dishes such as their signature prawn noodle dishes and tomato crispy mee, which is another specialty dish of Kuching. They serves buttermilk chicken rice and sweet sesame chicken rice too.
The tomato crispy mee (古晋特色茄汁炸面) is kolo mee fried till crispy, added with slices of chicken meat, a big prawn, slices of fishcake and drenched in tomato-based broth. The spiced tomato soup is not viscous, light-tasting and mildly sweet. It is a delightful dish.
The various prawn noodle dishes of Tan's Signature look good and tasty too. I must try them on next trip to Kuching.
