Located along Carpenter Street in Kuching Old Street, Yee Siang Dumpling House (怡香源) specialised in Chinese dumplings (饺子) and several local Sarawak dishes.
Yee Siang makes variants of pork, vegetable and chicken Chinese dumplings with different mixes of ingredients (mushroom, chives, prawn, cabbage, egg, etc). The dumplings, sold in sets of 5 pieces of each type per order, can be steamed, fried or in soup with extra ingredients. Minimum of 2 sets of dumplings are required to mix them.
Other than Chinese dumplings, Yee Siang also serves Sarawak laksa, including a "super" version, and local noodle and rice dishes, such as minced meat noodle, scallion noodle and braised pork rice. There are also Hainanese traditional breakfast (butter-kaya toasts, soft-boiled eggs and traditional kopi).
Yee Siang's traditional kopi-o (sugar is self-service) has a nice aroma and strong taste — which is my preference. The traditional butter-kaya toast has thick slabs of butter with not too much of the kaya (coconut jam). It tastes rich and not too sweet.
The pan-fried chicken-and-chives dumplings (5 pieces per set) is well-fried on one side and served with dark vinegar and ginger strips. Yee Siang's self-made dumplings are not very big and tasted very good with distinct flavours of its ingredients. Two sets of the dumplings will make a full meal per person.
The Sarawak Laksa Super comes with 3 big prawns, shredded eggs roll and shredded chicken. The Kuching-style laksa has savoury-sweet-spicy broth, but not too spicy, and is lighter than curry laksa and drinkable. The lime adds refreshing citrus flavour to the dish and the sambal chilli can further spiced up the broth with more flavours yet not too spicy. This laksa is delicious.
Yee Siang is an all-day restaurant serving all its dishes for breakfast, lunch, dinner and coffee-breaks — except on Tuesday and Thursday, 2pm to 6pm.
