There are quite a number of shops selling the well-known Sarawak kek lapis, or layer cake, along Jalan Main Bazaar next to Kuching Old Street. Kek Lapis Mama Su is one of those shops.
Mama Su has a wide range of freshly baked and colourful layer cakes, with different flavours, lining the long glass shelves. In addition to kek lapis, there are kek kukus, kek bakar and kek roll as well ranging over 40 flavours altogether.
In one corner, samplers are available for all cakes sold in the shop. Try the flavours and sweetness level before getting the desired layer cakes.
The layer cakes are sold in strips of 1.5 inch by 8 inch, so customers can get several strips of different flavoured cakes — instead of getting one big piece of a single flavour.
I bought 4 layer cakes with different flavours: (from front to back) durian, cinnamon, butterscotch and matcha & chocolate. They have nice tastes and different levels of sweetness and they are great as gifts.
Kek Lapis Mama Su has another outlet in Bangi, Selangor, closer to Kuala Lumpur.
