Yi Jian Xiao Mian (壹見小麵) is a Hong Kong-style tea cafe (港式茶餐厅) located in the town centre of Kluang, Johor. Interestingly, the restaurant has a couple of variations of its own name on three signboards — "壹見小麵", "壹见小面" and "遇见小面" with mixes of simplified and traditional Chinese characters that seemed similar and yet may imply different things.
The restaurant seems to be small from its shopfront but it has a larger space with many more seats behind the restaurant.
Easily mistaken as a noodle house from its Chinese name, Yi Jian Xiao Mian actually serves dim sums, traditional toasts, fried rice dishes and a long list of other dishes on top of noodles.
Some of Yi Jian Xiao Mian's signature breakfast dishes, such as toasts / sandwiches, egg tarts and wanton noodle, are showcased in posters hanging outside the kitchen.
They have quite a range of dim sum dishes. I have tried the steamed spare ribs (鼓汁蒸排骨), mixed-filling chee cheong fun (鸳鸯香港猪肠粉), shrimp dumplings (晶莹鲜虾饺) and stuffed egg-plants (茄子酿鱼肉) from the dim sum list. They are nice to mix and match to make a meal.
The dry-style Wanton Noodle, denoted as egg noodle (全蛋面) on the menu, is available with dark sauce only. Other than char siew and meat dumplings, crispy fried pork lards are added to the noodle too. The egg noodle is springy with tender barbecue pork and the meat dumplings are mild-savoury. This is truly delicious.
The Penang char kway teow (滨城炒粿条) is fried with prawns, slices of fishcake, egg, bean sprouts and spring onions. It is non-oily and nice too.
The "Ice-Fire" Polo Bun (冰火菠萝包) has warm crumbly egg crust on top and a slit through its side. A thick slice of cold butter is served separately. Put the savoury butter in the slit and the polo bun is ready to eat. A delicious bun to try.
With a wide range of dishes, one can definitely find something delectable at Yi Jian Xiao Mian.
