Kluang Eat: Restoran Chin Yoke Peng Crystal Dumplings (水晶糕)

Restoran Chin Yoke Peng is a restaurant that serves kuih kristal or crystal dumplings (水晶糕) as its signature dish. It is located diagonally opposite Tong Huat Traditional Confectionery (东发传统饼家), in Kampung Masjid Lama of Kluang town.

The little eatery has few tables and an open-view kitchen where food are prepared.

Chin Yoke Peng has a simple menu showing the 4 main types of dishes available. Their signatures are the crystal kuehs (水晶糕) and rice ball desserts (汤圆). Two noodle dishes, Asam laksa (亚参叻沙) and mushroom minced meat noodle (香菇肉碎面), are also available.

The steamed crystal kuehs (水晶糕) look really beautiful with translucent skin and well-defined texture. The soft skin holds its fillings (turnips, red carrot, dried shrimps, etc) well when picked up and does not break easily. It is not too sweet nor savoury and really great as light meal by itself or as side dish to the noodle dishes.

Chin Yoke Peng's desserts are really nice to go for even on hot days. The glutinous rice balls in ginger soup (姜汁汤圆) has minced peanut filling in the rice balls and is sweet-savoury. The ginger soup has a mellow sweet-gingerly flavour and not too spicy. Apart from kopi and teh, the ginger soup (姜汤) also serves as a hot beverage. It is rather special, tastes better than ginger tea, and a popular option among local diners.

The sweet potato and green beans soup with rice balls (番薯绿豆+汤圆) has the same peanut-filling rice balls in light and mild-sweet soup. It is a thirst-quenching dessert rather than being sweet that induce thirstiness.

The mushroom minced meat noodle (香菇肉碎面) uses thin yee-mee topped with fried anchovies, lettuce and braised mixtures of mushrooms, minced meat, black fungus, etc. Despite its darkish look, the dish has a pleasant taste and not too sweet nor savoury.

Without frills and fanfare, Chin Yoke Peng is a nice little place to go for kuih kristal, noodles and desserts, especially after buying tau sa peah (mung bean biscuit) or mooncake from Tong Huat Confectionery.
