Kluang Eat: Hailam Toast 1935 (海南土司坊)

Hailam Toast 1935, a Nanyang Kopitiam chain, has a mission to introduce Kluang local coffee and Malaysian delights to the mass market of Malaysia. The setup in Kluang, located along Jalan Lambak, is the flagship.

One of Hailam Toast's signature items is none other than its Hailam (or Hainanese) traditional toasts, sandwiches and roasted coffee. Malaysian delights include mee siam, nasi lemak, laksa, curry chicken, etc. Hainanese chicken chop is also on the menu. New to the menu are mee soto as weekday's special and Hailam chicken rice.

Hailam Toast's roasted coffee is thick, aromatic and has wonderful mouthfeel. It is non-bitter so getting a kopi-o kosong (no milk, no sugar) is the best way to appreciate its flavours.

The signature Hailam Chicken Chop (海南鸡扒) is served with fries, salad and a Hainanese-style sauce — with green peas in it. The tender chicken is nicely-fried and goes well with the tomato-based sauce. It is not too heavy for breakfast too.

The Mee Siam added-on with sambal sotong (squids) has flavourful mee siam with a fried egg, crackers, a lime and generous amount of squids in sweet-spicy sambal chilli. The squids are tender and the sambal chilli is not too spicy.

There are still a lot of items on Hailam Toast's menu and I will be back again to try other dishes.
