KL See: Kwai Chai Hong (鬼仔巷) @ Chinatown

Kwai Chai Hong (鬼仔巷) is an interesting sight-seeing spot in Chinatown of Kuala Lumpur. It is an alley surrounded by a number of resto-bars, and very near Four Points by Sheraton Hotel (Kuala Lumpur, Chinatown). Kwai Chai Hong's main entrance is located along Lorong Panggung — although the back doors of the surrounding resto-bars also lead to it.

Kwai Chai Hong is opened daily from 9am to midnight. There is no admission fee.

Kwai Chai Hong (鬼仔巷): Entrance

The Cantonese term "kwai chai" (鬼仔) is literally translated as "little ghost" but, in the case of Kwai Chai Hong, it refers to little kids who used to play and make noises in the alley in the 1960s. Today, the alley has turned into a memory lane of the old time with a number of artworks.

At the entrance to the alley, a "ceramic" lady wearing cheongsam sits on a bench.

Right inside the entrance is a Chinese-style Hong Qiao (红桥), or Red Bridge. After the wooden bridge is the alley that leads to several resto-bars.

Kwai Chai Hong (鬼仔巷): Hong Qiao & murals

There are a number of beautiful murals depicting life in the old days of Chinatown.

Kwai Chai Hong (鬼仔巷): More murals

A narrow stairway leads to an opening on an upper level where there are more murals on a big wall. One mural depicts street scene of old-day Chinatown with some kids playing in a corner with a real rubber-band rope. A real-life barber's chair sit in another corner with a painted barber standing behind it. Take creative photos by posing with the rubber-band rope and barber's chair.

Above the barber is a lady standing at a window with a 100-ringgit note in her hand — a scene not unfamiliar to those who had seen the movie named "Kung Fu Hustle (功夫)" produced by Stephen Chow.

Kwai Chai Hong has different views in the day and night. Colourful lanterns will light up at night offering a more vibrant scene.

Checking out the murals in Kwai Chai Hong is best done during the day when it is brighter and with fewer visitors. When all the resto-bars are opened in the evening, the alley may be more crowded.
