Attrus Bed & Breakfast.聚 is a relatively new budget accommodation, a hostel, in the city centre of Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia. The Chinese character in its logo is "聚", meaning "to gather". Despite being a "bed & breakfast" accommodation, Attrus B&B has more to offer than just basic amenities.
The Location
Attrus B&B is located in Bandar Johor Bahru and in closed proximity to JB Sentral (for trains and buses to get around Johor or to other states in West Malaysia), City Square Shopping Centres, KOMTAR JBCC, Zenith Lifestyle Centre, banks and many food options, especially in the Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Walk area. It is also very near to JB CIQ for crossing the Straits of Johor to Singapore.
The downside is: there is also a pub nearby — a pair of good ear-plugs is needed to sleep.
Check-in / Check-out
A bath towel, tooth brush and ear plugs will be issued on check-in, together with a deposit for the room access card. The bath towel will need to be returned with the access card on check-out to get a refund on the deposit.
The Beds
Attrus B&B offers modern capsule-style bunk beds in dormitories of various sizes consisting of different number of beds. Private rooms are also available and are mainly smaller rooms with capsules but reserved solely for single-, double- or larger group bookings — this allows flexibility in managing the allocation of beds.
(I booked a private single room and was allocated a room with two double-bed capsules.)
Each capsule can have either a single or double bed with pillows and quilt. They are very clean and comfortable. No shoes and consumption of food are allowed in the rooms.
The power socket in each capsule supports a large number of plug types without the need for adaptors. There are two 5-Volt USB ports as well for charging mobile devices directly.
Communal areas outside the rooms provide some space for interactions.
Most other facilities, such as bathrooms, are shared. The bathrooms are quite big with multiple cubicles. Most of the cubicles are for both toilet and shower use. There are hair dryers too.
Laundry services are also available if needed.
Dining Area
The spacious dining area on Level 2 provides a pantry and tables for consumption of food. It can accommodate large groups of guests too.
However, the female dormitories are besides the dining area so do keep volumes down.
Apart from large tables, there are cozy corners too.
Entrances & Exits
There are three ways to enter or exit Attrus B&B. One is via Attrus's reception area (requires receptionist to open the door) and one is via a side staircase (exit-only). The third way is to enter and exit via Padi Kopitiam, a cafe right beside the hostel and inter-connected via a lift (using the room access card).
The Cafes
Padi Kopitiam is a coffeeshop-style cafe serving traditional coffee (or tea), Malaysia's local delights and the cafe's signature polo buns and Portuguese-style egg tarts. It offers discounts for Attrus's guests.
Next to Padi Kopitiam is Cafe Principle, which is a modern cafe under the same management as Padi Kopitiam — by The Awesome Mankind (T.A.M.). It is a convenient place for meals and for those who likes cafe-hopping.
