In Singapore and Malaysia, shopping centres usually open their doors at around 10am to shoppers — same goes to JB City Square and other shopping centres in Johor Bahru. Very often, Singapore residents going to Johor Bahru will either have to wait till 10am to have late breakfast in JB City Square or fill their stomachs at some other places before going to shopping centres after 10am to shop.
A new implementation opens JB City Square to breakfasters — not shoppers — as early as 8am to serve breakfast by participating eateries. So, beat the crowds, have breakfast in JB City Square while waiting for all other shops to open at 10am.
Breakfasters with intentions to have breakfast in JB City Square can enter the shopping centre via applicable entrances, including the furthest "Entrance D". See how to get to Entrance D in later part of this post.
Which restaurants or stores will be opened to serve breakfast?
1. Hock Kee Kopitiam (福气安康)
Hock Kee Kopitiam is a Nanyang Kopitiam serving traditional coffee, toasts and Nanyang cuisines. It is located on Level 4 and will serve breakfast from 8am onwards. Other than à la carte items on its breakfast menu, Hock Kee has breakfast set meals at value prices. Last order for the set meals is at 9:45am — so, be early.
Access to Hock Kee Kopitiam is via the Level 3 entrance nearest to JB Sentral. Take the escalator up to Level 4 and Hock Kee Kopitiam is just round a corner.
2. OldTown White Coffee (旧街场)
OldTown White Coffee, located on Level 3, is a kopitiam-chain from Ipoh that serves Malaysian local delights, toasts, dim sum and also Ipoh white coffee. It will serve breakfast from 8am onwards with some value meal sets.
To go to OldTown, enter JB City Square via the entrance nearest to JB Sentral. You will come to Level 3 and the restaurant is behind the escalator.
3. Oriental Kopi (华阳)
Oriental Kopi is another Nanyang Kopitiam serving traditional coffee, Nanyang dishes, toasts, traditional pastries and vegetarian dishes too. It is located in the basement and will serve breakfast from 8am onwards — it changed its opening hour recently. All dishes on Oriental Kopi's menu are available for breakfast but value breakfast set meals are only available till 10:30am.
Access to Oriental Kopi is via Entrance B and Entrance D (near Burger King). Take the escalator near Entrance D down to the basement and Oriental Kopi is just round a corner.
4. Starbucks Coffee
Located on Level 1, Starbucks Coffee will open at 9am. It has an outer entrance facing Jalan Wong Ah Fook. There is no need to enter the shopping centre although both Entrance B and Entrance D will lead to the coffee outlet too.
There is another Starbucks Coffee at KOMTAR JBCC. From JB Sentral, you will see the JBCC outlet before reaching JB City Square's outlet.
5. Avery-Day
Avery-Day convenience store is located on Level 1 too, right beside Entrance B. The store will also open at 9am. It has an outer entrance facing Jalan Wong Ah Fook too.
6. Old Chang Kee (老曾记)
Old Chang Kee is a well-known brand from Singapore and its range of snacks is cheaper in Malaysia than in Singapore. It is said that there are differences in the snacks too, especially its curry puffs, which is another reason to give them a try. Old Chang Kee's stall is located on Level 3, opposite OldTown White Coffee, and is opened at 9am. There is no dine-in, just grab the snacks and go.
To get to Old Chang Kee, enter JB City Square via the entrance nearest JB Sentral. You will come to Level 3 and walk towards Uniqlo. The stall is just outside the barricades with a security personnel.
7. Nyonya Sister
Although not mentioned, Nyonya Sister may also be opened around 9am, or earlier, to sell its Nyonya pastries and packets of nasi lemak. It is located right outside OldTown White Coffee. Grab the pastries and go too.

Getting to JB City Square Entrance B/D
If you have not been to Johor Bahru in West Malaysia before, check out this post:
JB City Square's Entrance B/D is the furthest entrance from JB Sentral. To get to Entrance B/D from JB Sentral or JB Checkpoint (JB CIQ), go through and exit JB Sentral via its main entrance and use the pedestrian bridge to cross the road (Jalan Tun Abdul Razak). Looking from JB Sentral, JB City Square is on the left and KOMTAR JBCC is to the right.
At the end of the bridge, turn left to JB City Square and take the escalator up to Level 3 for OldTown White Coffee, Old Chang Kee or Nyonya Sister, take another escalator up to Level 4 for Hock Kee Kopitiam.
To get to Avery-Day, Starbucks Coffee and Oriental Kopi, there are 2 ways:
Cut-through JB City Square (new)
Walk outside JB City Square (old & longer)
1. Cut-through JB City Square (new)
Noting the long route to get to Entrance B/D, and the sun and rain that customers have to go through to get there, the management of JB City Square has improved the implementation by opening a new access path through the shopping centre.
Take this path:
At Level 3 entrance of JB City Square, from JB Sentral, take the escalator up to Level 4 where Hock Kee Kopitiam is.
Walk past Hock Kee Kopitiam and turn right to get to the passenger lifts (not the single cargo lift).
Take the lift down to Level 1 — a security personnel will ensure that non-staff can only access Level 1 and Level 4.
The lift will open next to Entrance B. Walk to Avery-Day or Starbucks Coffee within the shopping centre. To get to Oriental Kopi, walk past Avery-Day and Starbuck Coffee towards Entrance D and take the escalator down to the basement.
2. Walk outside JB City Square (old)
If you prefer to take the longer route by walking outside of JB City Square, turn right to KOMTAR JBCC at the bridge. You will see Starbucks Coffee @ JBCC. Follow the corridor to an exit (under McDonald's logo), with flights of steps, that leads to McDonald @ JBCC on the ground floor.
After exiting KOMTAR JBCC, walk back along Jalan Tun Adbul Razak towards JB City Square. There is a narrow lane between KOMTAR JBCC and JB City Square, walk till the end of the lane (intersection with Jalan Wong Ah Fook) and Entrance B is to the left — which is now opened for access to level 3 / 4 using the lifts or staircase and also to Oriental Kopi without having to walk outside the shopping centre.
Avery-Day, a convenience store with a cafe called Faculty of Caffeine, is located right next to Entrance B and will open at 8am but the cafe opens at 9am. Both Avery-Day and Starbucks Coffee can be accessed from Entrance B.
To get to Oriental Kopi, enter Entrance B too, walk past Avery-Day and Starbuck Coffee towards Entrance D and take the escalator down to the basement.
Security personnels will be stationed at various locations to prevent access to closed sections, ask them if unsure of the route.
