Near to one end of Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Walk is a rustic shop that is in no hurry to modernise. It is an attractive scene that stands out from the two rows of modern-day shops that lined the heritage walk. The shop with its dated-looking front is called Triple K Cafe (面家食馆), a traditional beef (and mutton) noodle house.
A quick look from outside the noodle house shows that it sell both beef noodle and mutton noodle. Various types of buns, siew mai and pastries are also available. On one wall, a huge menu shows they have a lot more dishes to offer. Other than beef and mutton dishes, there are fish, chicken, duck, pork and frog dishes too.
The mutton noodle soup (羊肉面) has aromas of both the mutton and steaming herbal soup. The tender mutton has retained some of its gaminess but yet not too strong. The sour-spicy dipping sauce adds refreshing flavours to the meat. The herbal broth, garnished with chopped spring onions, tastes rich and flavourful. I love mutton dishes.
The triple-combo beef noodle soup (牛杂面), with beef, beef balls and tripes, is nice and tasty too. The slices of beef were very tender and juicy in the light dark broth. The handmade meaty beef balls had rich beef flavour. I love this dish too!
The Lamb Pot (羊腩煲) has lamb brisket, lamb stomach and tofu puffs in a claypot of lightly spiced and flavourful broth. The chunks of brisket are meaty and tender and the cuts of thinly-sliced lamb stomach are tender too with hint of chewiness but not tough to bite.
For side dishes, the half-boiled eggs are nicely done with no raw egg white. The handmade siew mai (meat dumpling) is quite big with three of them making a dim sum dish. It is a meaty snack to complement any main dish.
There were still a lot more of the noodles and rice dishes that I had not tried and I will be back for more, especially my favourite beef and mutton dishes.
