Tampoi Laksa (淡杯叻沙), as the name implies, is located in Taman Tampoi of Johor Bahru, pretty near to Angsana Johor Bahru Mall — not hard to find. It is housed outside a kampung house and is opened for business only in the evenings.
Tampoi Laksa is a small setup with a stall and few tables. The food are prepared on a push cart that can be moved around and a sheltered dining area is located outside the compound.
Tampoi Laksa is well-known among locals for its curry laksa. It also serves rojak, sotong rebus (cuttlefish with water spinach) and kerang rebus (fresh cockles).
A normal serving of the curry laksa uses a mix of both yellow noodle and vermicelli, unless requested otherwise. Other ingredients include fishballs, a full hard-boiled egg, tofu puffs, beansprouts, fresh cockles, etc. The curry gravy is not too spicy and easy to drink. The laksa is really good, no wonder it is so popular.
Another popular dish that can accompany a bowl of laksa is the kerang rebus, or boiled cockles. The cockles are not overly-cooked and still retained most of its freshness — meaning they are still a little "bloody". If the cockles are too raw for you, put them in the hot laksa gravy for a little while and you will have a bowl of laksa that is full of fresh cockles.
One more thing, as Tampoi Laksa opens for business from 5pm onwards, its busiest hours is usually around 6:30~9:30pm when crowds pour in for dinner, resulting in waiting time for as long as 30 minutes. So, be early or be patient.
