JB Eat: Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul (潮州煎蕊) @ JB City Square

Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul (潮州煎蕊), also known as "Penang Chendul", is a restaurant chain with numerous franchised outlets throughout Malaysia. The nearest outlet to Singapore is just across the Causeway in JB City Square, opposite JB Sentral.

Tucked in one corner on Level 3 of the shopping mall, Penang Chendul specialises in Penang delicacies, especially their Teochew cendol — or "chendul" as they called it — since it is used in the name of the restaurant chain.

Apart from their original cendol, Penang Chendul serves other variants of the coconut milk dessert with ice-cream, durian, etc. White coffee, chocolate and milk tea cendols seem rather interesting. Other than cendol, there are a list of Penang delicacies, such as assam laksa, white curry mee, Hokkien prawn mee, nasi lemak, etc. Traditional breakfast items of kopi, half-boiled eggs and toasts are also on the menu.

The Penang prawn mee is a noodle dish filled with ingredients in spicy broth. There are prawns, slices of fishcake, half an egg, strips of chicken meat, beansprouts, kang kong and garnished with fried shallots. Also known as Penang's "Hokkien mee", the dish uses a combination of both thick yellow noodle and thin vermicelli, giving different textures. This is good.

Penang white curry mee is another popular Penang noodle dish serves with prawns, tofu puffs, long beans, beansprouts, etc, in coconut-milk-based curry broth. The white curry, without turmeric and red chillies, is not spicy but with a rich and creamy texture.

Another popular Penang dish is the assam laksa. Instead of sweet-spicy curry broth, the use of tamarind, lemongrass, ginger, etc, give the dish a sourish-spicy taste. Thick lai fun (rice noodle) is used for the dish and added with fish flakes. The strong-aroma shrimp paste is served separately and to be mixed into the noodle dish as desired.

Nutmeg juice is also a popular drink in Penang and it is served in Teochew Chendul as well. Go for its unique taste and health benefits.

The original cendol is served with gula Melaka, red beans and green rice flour jelly in crushed ice and coconut milk. It is refreshingly good and not too sweet.

Durian cendol is served with similar ingredients as the original cendol, except red beans, and a chunk of iced creamy durian puree. It has a nice durian flavour without an overbearing durian aroma.

Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul is a great restaurant to satisfy cravings for Penang food without having to fly to Penang.
