It is the time of the year for a reunion lunch before Chinese New Year — and we had it at Restoran Pekin (北京海鲜酒楼) in Johor Bahru. Pekin Restaurant has about 5 outlets across Johor Bahru and the outlet in Taman Sentosa is the closest to Singapore and easy to get to.
The Chinese restaurant serves seafood and roasted delights as its signature dishes above a long list of other Chinese dishes. Most dishes on the menu look super tempting.
Kickstarting our reunion feast is a Roasted Suckling Pig (烤乳猪) with crispy skin. It is non-oily. Note that reservation is required for this dish.
Not to miss is the Crispy Duck (琵琶鸭) with crispy skin and tender duck meat. It is delicious and I love this dish a lot.
For seafood, the steamed Dragon Tiger Grouper (清蒸龙虎斑) is one of the popular choices. The fish is very fresh with firm flesh.
The Soya Sauce Prawns (豉油虾) uses large fresh prawns and is a tasty dish.
This special vegetable dish (年菜) has many ingredients, such as mushrooms, carrots, chicken meat, clam, etc, wrapped in Chinese cabbage and steamed. It is available only during Chinese New Year.
Other dishes are Fried Noodle (干面线) with seafood, La Wei Rice (腊味饭) wrapped in lotus leaves, Sea Cucumber & Dry Fish Maw (海参鱼鳔) and Pasley Beancurd (苋菜豆腐), which is very special.
Ask the locals to recommend a Chinese restaurant for CNY reunion lunch or dinner and most of them will suggest "Pekin Restaurant" — that was how we knew about it.
