Pacific Kopi (民洋茶室) is a new setup in the vicinity of Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Walk, an area that is populated by restaurants and cafes. This is Pacific Kopi's second outlet with the first located in Taman Sutera Utama. The restaurant serves traditional coffee, toasts, traditional snacks and Malaysian local delights.
Pacific Kopi has few tables on the open-air ground floor, as well as some alfresco seats outside the restaurant.
More seats are available on the air-conditioned second floor.
One of the signature dishes of Pacific Kopi is their fried rice cakes, which are available as "original" or "3-in-1". Other dishes include nasi lemak, biryani rice, curry laksa and various noodle dishes, and traditional toasts. When spoilt for choice, flip to the "Top 10" pages and pick from the list.
The Pacific 3-in-1 fried rice cake (民洋招牌三合一炸年糕) has 4 pieces of rice cakes sandwiched between thick slices of sweet potato and yam. The nicely-fried, non-oily snack is crispy and the homemade rice cake is not over-fried till too soft and not too sweet. This is really a must try.
There is a new variant using purple sweet potato in place of yam.
A traditional breakfast set with hot hor ga sai (kopi-o with chocolate powder), two soft-boiled eggs, butter & kaya toasts and fried rice cakes is my way to try as many of Pacific Kopi's dishes as possible. The soft-boiled eggs are perfectly done till the state where there are no raw albumen and their toasts has great buttery taste.
The Pacific Mushroom Chicken Mala Pan Mee (dry) is a tasty dish. The homemade pan mee is added with minced chicken and mushroom sauce, poached egg, fried anchovies, kailan, fishballs and mala sauce. The mala sauce is aromatic, not very spicy and greatly enhanced the flavours of the noodle dish. The poached egg smoothens the whole dish and gel the ingredients to the pan mee. Tasty and delicious.
The signature Pacific char lou shu fen (民洋招牌香炒老鼠粉), or fried mouse vermicelli, has similar tastes like char kway teow but nicer and adding some lime juice further enhances the flavours of the dish.
Pacific Kopi's chwee kueh (水粿) is another nice and tasty dish to try. The white chwee kueh has nice texture, not watery, and accompanied by specially-concocted sweet and savoury garnish — not using preserved radish. Chilli can be added separately.
The salted-egg chicken chop is fried chicken served with cherry tomatoes, salad and french fries. It is accompanied by a small bowl of mild-spicy dipping sauce made with salted-egg and curry leaves. This is also a great dish to go for.
Pacific Kopi has banana cake too. The cake is soft and moist with a nice banana aroma and does not taste too sweet. It is available in two sizes: half loaf or whole loaf. Buying a whole loaf to take home is more worth it.
The last time I was at Pacific Kopi was a long weekend and it had a long queue.
