JB Buy: Ming Ang Confectionery (明安特产专卖店) Traditional Pastries @ Taman Century

Ming Ang Confectionery is one of my favourite shops to get traditional pastries from Johor Bahru. It has several outlets in or near shopping malls closer to Singapore — e.g. AEON Mall Bukit Indah, KSL City Mall and JB City Square. I always patronise the outlet opposite KSL City Mall since I usually go to the eating places around the mall for local food.

Ming Ang's most popular signature product is their self-baked heong peah or fragrant pastries. They have both the original and mocha versions. The heong peahs are so fast-selling that customers are usually buying freshly-baked hot pastries from the shops, especially on weekends.

Ming Ang (明安) 烧包

My favourite pastries from Ming Ang are the original heong peah (芝麻香饼), the chicken char siew buns (烧包) and wife biscuits (老婆饼).

The original heong peahs are not too sweet and I can eat a couple of the pastries at a time without feeling sinful. The crust of the chicken char siew buns are crispy (especially after re-heating up in an air-fryer for about 5 minutes). The portion of the barbecue chicken filling is much more than other char siew buns and not too sweet.

I like their wife biscuits a lot. The thin, layered crusts with sesame seeds are flaky and the proportion of the winter melon filling to crust is just right. The soft filling is mild sweet and contains small bits of winter melon and sesame seeds that adds more texture — you just have to try it to know I mean.

Another signature product of Ming Ang is the creamy milk biscuit (奶香酥饼). The sweet and milk-fragrant biscuit is innovated from the classic Chinese shortbread with oozy caramelised sugar filling — a fusion of Chinese pastry and western cream. Despite it being a sweet pastry, it is not too sweet though and goes well with unsweetened coffee.

Ming Ang's tausa peah or mung bean biscuit (豆沙饼) is another hot-seller. Unlike other mung bean biscuits that I have tried before, the freshly-baked tausa peah has crispy crust and filled with sweet-savoury mung bean paste with a little saltiness — it is like combining a sweet tausa peah and a salty tausa peah into one. It tastes so good that I can't stop at just one piece each time.

There are various flavours of tambun biscuits (淡文饼) and other puffs too. Apart from freshly-baked pastries, Ming Ang also carries local products from other parts of Malaysia.
