JB Eat: JB Fried Oyster (新山蚝煎) @ Meldrum Walk Stall 37

JB Fried Oyster (新山蚝煎) is famous among Johorians for its fried oyster omelette. It is located in a back lane known as Medan Selera Meldrum Walk, off Jalan Wong Ah Fook, and operating from stall No. 37.

As Medan Selera Meldrum Walk is along a back alley, the environment may not be pleasing to some people. Most customers of JB Fried Oyster, especially locals, will prefer to pack and takeaway the food. The stall do have few portable tables and chairs for those who want to dine-in.

Don't be too happy to see no customers around the stall, they are usually sold out on advanced orders regardless of weekdays or weekends. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to pre-order via WhatsApp (more information below) before going to the stall.

JB Fried Oyster has two flavours of fried oyster omelette: spicy (sambal chilli flavour) and non-spicy (garlic flavour). There is only one size for each serving at RM13 and extra oysters will cost additional RM5 (prices as of July 2024). The oysters are imported from Thailand and its size may vary depending on seasons.

The chef cooks every packet of fried oyster omelette few minutes before the collection time. The eggs are nicely cooked without over-frying and still retain some moisture. Big fresh oysters and spring onions are added to the frying pan for a short while just before each serving is done.

The fried oyster omelette (spicy) is not oily and has quite a number of the big oysters for a normal order without adding extra oysters. It has a nice sambal chilli flavour and not very spicy. The eggs are fried on one side and still soft on the other, giving the omelette more textures, and not starchy. The fresh oysters are without fishy smell of course. The oyster omelette is flavourful and tasty indeed — no wonder it is so popular and always sold out if pre-ordered too late.

I will go for the non-spicy garlic version next time. And will ask to dine-in to see any differences between packed and unpacked — I have doubt that packed food is as good as freshly cooked food.
