JB Eat: IT Roo Cafe Chicken Chop @ Tan Hiok Nee

Located opposite Salahuddin Bakery, at the intersection between Jalan Dhoby and Jalan Pahang, IT Roo Cafe claimed to be "The Best Chicken Chop in Town". It was said the skill to cook the chicken chop was learnt from the British in the old days and passed down till this day.

The cafe came to fame when it was awarded the "Best Chicken Chop in Malaysia" title by The Star newspaper in 2003.

IT Roo Cafe's signature dish is crispy chicken chop (RM18.50). A grilled version is available as well at the same price. The highly recommended beverage is the old-school root beer float with vanilla ice-cream (RM7.50). Apart from western dishes, there are Chinese dishes, fried rice, noodles and sandwiches.

A small dish of peanuts may be served per table at RM2 each (let the staff know if you don't want it).

The crispy version of the chicken chop is deep-fried till crispy and yet not greasy. Accompanying the golden-fried chicken are potato wedges and coleslaw and with either black pepper or mushroom sauce. The fried chicken meat is still tender and not dry.

The grilled version of the chicken chop is meatier, tender and goes well with the accompanying sauce.

The cafe's "IT ROO Fried Rice" is also highly praised by many customers. The Chinese-style fried rice is cooked with chicken, prawns, egg, onions, spring onions, etc. The dish is nicely-fried and taste good with smoky wok flavour — no wonder this dish is the IT Roo fried rice.

The old-school root beer float with vanilla ice-cream is quite a pleasant beverage on hot afternoons.
