All IKEA outlets — in Singapore and Malaysia — will have a Swedish restaurant in their premises, serving Swedish food, western food and also local delights. The nearest IKEA outlet in Johor Bahru is in Taman Desa Tebrau, thus, known as IKEA Tebrau.
Other than buying furniture and household items from IKEA Tebrau, having a meal at its Swedish Restaurant is also one of the things to do. As IKEA Tebrau is connected to Toppen Shopping Centre, the restaurant is also opened to Toppen's shoppers without needing them to exit the shopping centre.
In Malaysia, IKEA's restaurants are Halal-certified. Getting the food at the restaurant is self-service. Just queue, take some trays, pick up the desired dishes from respective food counters and pay at the cashier. Coffee, tea and low-sugar soft drinks are refillable.
We had a feast, in 2018, with Baked Chicken Leg, Vegetable Balls, Smoked Salmon, Lotus Leaf Rice, Sausage Spring Roll and coffee. Some of the dishes have been renamed or modified over the years. Some are seasonal — they are available during certain occasions.
The Lotus Leaf Rice, or glutinous rice with chicken, wrapped in lotus leaves is a very nice dish. The sweet-savoury and flavourful rice, with tender chicken, is induced with the nice aroma of lotus leaf.
The Chicken Chop is served with black pepper sauce, mashed potatoes and vegetables. It is a nice western dish.
The Marinated Salmon Plate, accompanied by a piece of cut lemon and mustard sauce, is a simple cold dish. The savoury smoked salmon has always been one of my favourites at IKEA restaurants.
The well-fried chicken wings of the restaurant is one of the hottest-selling item but it is sold in sets of 6 pieces only.
IKEA's Swedish Restaurant in Johor Bahru is a great place for those who like to dine at IKEA to have a feast there. It is cheaper for Singapore residents too.
