Hai Kah Lang (海脚人) is a well-known restaurant serving mainly seafood and seafood noodles. It started business in 2021 and has been awarded Michelin Bib Gourmand since 2022. Hai Kah Lang has several outlets in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor but only one outlet in Johor Bahru. The JB outlet is located along Jalan Sutera in Taman Sentosa.
Hai Kah Lang, in Taman Sentosa, is housed in a spacious 2-storey restaurant with cosy settings. They used only fresh seafood catches and these are laid out on ice near the entrance with the names of the seafood displayed above.
Hai Kah Lang has a long list of seafood ingredients and different types of noodle for customising the desired fish head noodle or seafood noodle. Diners can choose any ingredients for their noodle dishes. A special Tom Yum Prawn Noodle is also on the menu with options for tiger prawns or ming prawns (seasonal pricing). There are side dishes using seafood as well and another long list of hot and cold beverages.
The Leopard Coral Grouper Kway Teow Soup (七星斑鱼片粿条汤) — or any fish meat — uses big pieces of fresh grouper meat with seaweed and the soup is added with large amount of corianders, spring onions and fragrant Shaoxing rice wine. The soup has a sweet aroma and a mellow taste — you will feel that it is a waste not to finish it. There is no strong gingerly taste since the fish meat are so fresh.
Apart from leopard coral grouper's meat, the fish's belly meat is also available as a separate dish and with a higher price tag — go for it if you know your fish.
The Mixed Seafood Noodle is the best option to try more seafood in a bowl of seafood noodle. There are fish meat slices, prawns, clams, squids and half a crab in the same clear soup with corianders, spring onions and fragrant Shaoxing rice wine. And the dry-toss thin egg noodle is surprisingly good and very springy. This combination of mixed seafood soup with dry-toss noodle is highly recommended.
Apart from clear soup, another option will be to add milk to sweeten the soup — for example, a Mixed Seafood Soup added with milk (top-left). Other seafood dishes that we have tried are fried soft shell crabs (炸软壳蟹), chilled fresh oysters (冰镇生蚝) and fresh cockles (血蛤) that have been lightly blanched to remove most of the blood.
A side note, on Hai Kah Lang's menu, clams are called "lala" (啦啦) whereas cockles are called "clams". It may be a little confusing but, fortunately, their menu has pictures.
Be advised that Hai Kah Lang can get very crowded and with long queues on weekends and public holidays. Go on weekdays and during off-peak hours if possible.
