JB Eat: Grandma Ong (王奶奶面粉粿) Mee Hoon Kueh @ Pelangi

Grandma Ong (王奶奶面粉粿) is a restaurant chain specialising in mee hoon kueh (hand-torn noodle), since 1999, and various other noodle dishes. It started in Taman Sentosa after years of selling mee hoon kueh from a roadside stall — and keeping it that way till this day (evening hours only). It has several branches in Johor and the outlet in Taman Maju Jaya, near Plaza Pelangi, is the nearest to Singapore.

Grandma Ong's noodle dishes can be ordered à la carte or in packaged sets (with a beverage and a side dish) that is cheaper with up to 15% discount. Other than the "Classic" mee hoon kueh (经典面粉粿), there are "Healthy" spinach noodle (健康菠菜面), "Meat Craving" noodle with minced meat and mushroom (香菇肉碎面), "Volcano" black noodle (火山黑面) and Sichuan "Mala" noodle (四川麻辣香面), to mix and match with specific lists of beverages and side dishes.

Apart from the set menu, there are more dishes in a thicker menu-booklet, including vegetarian dishes and kid's meals.

Grandma Ong (王奶奶面粉粿): Set Menu

The classic mee hoon kueh is served with thin pieces of cooked hand-torn dough in clear soup topped with fish balls, meat balls, minced meat, mushrooms, a poached egg and sayur manis (money chye) green vegetable and garnished with fried anchovies and fried shallots. It is a nice dish of traditional taste.

The Volcano Black Noodle (火山黑面) is served with dry-style charcoal noodle topped with fish balls, meat balls, minced meat, mushrooms, fried anchovies, a poached egg, fried shallots and added with Grandma Ong's special prawn chilli with crispy bits of fried garlic and shallot. An accompanying bowl of soup contains quite a lot of sayur manis vegetable.

Mash the poached egg and mix all the ingredients with the black noodle and it becomes a delicious bowl with wonderful flavours and cruchiness. The “mild” spicy version is really mildly spicy and I will try the “medium” or “hot” spiciness level next time. This dish is really must try too.

There are a number of tasty side dishes to complement any of the main dishes — I have tried the garlic sausage (蒜香香肠) and 5-spice meat roll (五香肉条) on two visits.

Grandma Ong's noodles are available for sales with condiments for cooking at home. Homemade condiments, such as prawn chilli, fried garlic (with oil) and fried shallot (with oil), are also available for sales in small jars.
