JB Eat & Buy: Sunday Night Market @ Permas Jaya (百万镇星期日夜市)

When mentioning a pasar malam (night market) in Johor Bahru, most Singapore residents will probably point out the night market at KSL City Mall — but it takes place on Monday evenings only. Unknown to many, there are other night markets elsewhere on different day of the week.
The night market in Permas Jaya (百万镇), of Masai District, takes place on Sunday evenings and it is not very far from JB City Centre. The event is held along the entire stretch of Jalan Permas 11 and there is a direct bus service from/to JB Sentral.
Similar to other night markets, Permas Night Market offers a wide variety of food & snacks stalls, vegetable & fruit stalls, etc, and non-food stalls selling clothings, accessories, etc. In the picture (below) are stalls selling stinky tofu, nasi lemak with fried chicken, wax apples (莲雾), popcorns, fried oyster omelette, otak-otak, etc.
The wax apples are very juicy, mild-sweet and great for quenching thirst.
Permas Jaya Food Street (百万镇美食街) is also located along the street and offers more dining options for visitors to the night market with tables and chairs. There are also many restaurants nearby — including 118 Wei Seafood Restaurant (118海鲜餐馆) that serves seafood dishes and Johor-specialty san lou mee hoon (三楼米粉).
We also tried oyster omelette from a stall in the night market. It has big oysters that are well-cooked (on our requests) and the omelette has a nice wok aroma.
Other than ready-to-eat food and fruits, there are many confectionery stalls selling cakes, tiramisu (提拉米苏), brown sugar cake (马来糕), breads, swiss rolls, traditional pastries, biscuits, etc, to take home.
Permas Sunday Night Market offers another great option for an evening walk, eat and buy in Johor Bahru on a Sunday night instead of Monday. And, unlike KSL City Night Market, it is not overcrowded. Visit the night market using a short bus-trip (30 minutes from JB CIQ) or plan a staycation in Permas Jaya.
