There are a number of outlets selling bak but teh (肉骨茶 or pork-ribs soup) along Jalan Keris 1 in Taman Sri Tebrau (between Pelangi and Taman Sentosa in Johor Bahru), but I frequent Ah Soon Bak Kut Teh (亞顺肉骨茶) the most. The coffeeshop is popular among locals and Singaporeans and can be very packed on weekends.
Ah Soon Bak Kut Teh serves their traditional pork-ribs soup in claypots with cut Chinese fried dough (油条). Other ingredients such as pig livers, pig intestines, fried beancurd skins, enoki mushrooms, etc, can be added-on to the soup on ordering.
The first time I went to Ah Soon, I was alone and ordered a serving of the bak kut teh with enoki mushrooms for one pax. The traditional way to eat the pork-ribs was to dip it in the dark sweet soy sauce and eat with some chopped chilli. The meat was tender and separated from the bones easily. The soup was mildly herbal and savoury.
The second time I went back, I brought along a friend and ordered a larger portion of the pork-ribs soup with fried beancurd skins, tofu puffs and pig livers. Apart from the usual cut fried dough, there were additional dishes of preserved vegetables and braised tofu puffs.
Apart from their pork-ribs soup, we also tried another popular dish of Ah Soon this time — the claypot sesame chicken. The fragrant chicken with dark-soy-sesame sauce was really good. The sauce was a great condiment to add to the rice. It was really hard not to finish all the dishes, rice and very last drop of the soup. The lightly-sour and not too salty preserved vegetables was my favourite too.
After the border reopened, I went back again in a group of eight. We ordered two large servings of claypot pork-ribs soup with pig livers and enoki mushrooms — I forgot about the fried beancurd skins after two long years. But I did not forget about the not-to-be-missed sesame chicken. Again, we finished everything.
On average, it should cost about RM20 per pax (depending on what was ordered).
