JB Eat: 80000 Eighty Thousand By Fam @ Tan Hiok Nee - CLOSED

Update:

The outlet at Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Walk has been marked as "Temporary Closed" on Google Maps for months and no sign of restarting.

Tan Hiok Nee Heritage Walk, a short lane in Bandar Johor Bahru, and its adjacent streets have a large number of great eating places. It is a food haven in close proximity to Johor Bahru Checkpoint, and the nearest to Singapore.

Restoran 80000 by Fam is located right towards the end of Jalan Tan Hiok Nee — a rewarding gem for those who venture to the far end to seek out wonderful dining places. It is a nice and cozy two-storey cafe.

"80000 by Fam" sure is a very unique name and the cafe is the second outlet. The first outlet is called Fam Cafe, located in Taman Sutera Utama, Skudai, near to Sutera Mall.

The cafe has several tables and a tall bar table on the ground floor. A stairway leads to the second floor with some nice settings by a large glass window with a wide view of the quiet street below.

80000 by Fam has a unique way to identify orders by each table — they use glass bottles with different objects in it as identification "tags". My orders were "marked" by a faux flower. First time to the cafe for lunch, I ordered their signature koffee which is traditional Nanyang milk coffee with a nice aroma and smooth taste.

I like their Malaysian-style "Rendang Lover". It is a rice dish, with blue butterfly-pea flavoured rice covered by an omelette and surrounded by fried chicken meat and crispy hash browns in mild-spicy rendang curry sauce. The fried chicken meat is very tender with no hard or over-fried parts and that really surprise me. It is a great dish that is really a must-try.

The ice Nanyang-style signature koffee, with similar smooth taste as the hot version, is very welcoming, especially on hot days.

The cafe's pesto pasta dish is named "Thunder Pesto". Similar to the Hakka-style "thunder tea" rice (擂茶) where greenish mixed-herbs sauce is added to rice, greenish pesto sauce is added to pasta in this case and topped with parmesan cheese. The pasta is accompanied by lightly-fried smoked duck meat.

The pasta is nicely-made without having too much sauce and the smoked duck is ultra-best! The slices of smoked duck meat are soft, juicy and very tender despite them looking slightly thicker — I am really surprised. I highly recommend to try the smoked duck!

I love the food I have tried so far in 80000 by Fam cafe, the vibes and its friendly staff. I will be back for more of their delicacies.
