Taman Melodies, in Johor Bahru, is known for its large number of big stylish cafes in bungalows. The Portal is one of those cafes. The cafe may not seem impressive externally but that is the concept it wants to create.
The entrance to the cafe is a "hole" on a side wall. After entering, a series of arch-like frames gives the sensation of "transitioning" through a portal to another space "on the other side". The spacious and cosy cafe is a very peaceful place to be, especially on weekdays.
The Portal Cafe serves a list of all-day brunch and mains of various styles including western, Korean, Japanese and also Malaysian. There are sides and desserts for light bites. The cafe has a list of its own blended coffee and tea under the "Portal's Blend" section.
The Carrot Cake is not too sweet and contains scraped carrots, raisins and chunks of walnut sandwiched between layers of mild-savoury cream. The cake is topped with a small piece of dried lemon, walnut and crushed biscotti. It is a nice cake to go for other than sweet cakes.
The hot Roasted Hazelnut Latte is a nice coffee with hazelnut flavour.
The Portal Cafe is a nice place to be for some quiet time. I will go for their brunch or main dishes next time.
