JB Cafe: Bev C'afe x No. 1438 @ Tan Hiok Nee

Bev C is a multi-label fashion store located along Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, a street full of popular restaurants and cafes. Apparels of independent designers, such as fashionable wears, accessories, foot wears, etc, filled the ground level of the store, which also houses a cafe on its second level.

Going up the stair to the upper level leads to the bar counter of Bev C'afe and a small section with seats at the rear of Bev C. A glass shelf will showcase the pastries that are available.

There are more table and seats on the other side of the bar counter — above the shop front. A gigantic light — shaped like a light bulb — brighten both the cafe and the store below. The wooden-plank floor is a reminder that Bev C is housed in an old house.

The menu is available online after scanning a QR code on the table but ordering is through the staff. Bev C'afe do serve meals, including all-day brunch, pasta and salad. There are several special coffees and filtered coffee too.

Surprisingly, there is cascara latte and tea on the cafe's menu. Cascara is the dried peels of coffee cherries and is served as tea in recent years. The hot (classic) cascara latte is technically a milk-coffee flavoured with cascara, which gives a mild cherry-fruity flavour to the coffee. To try the original taste of cascara, go for a cup of cascara tea.

The signature ice-cubed espresso with lavender in milk is served with 3 cubes of iced espresso in a glass and a carafe with milk and lavender. The lavender flavour is pretty strong.

The lavender-milk needs to be poured on the espresso cubes and stirred to dissolve them before sipping the cold coffee.

Lei cha (擂茶), or "thunder tea", is a popular Hakka rice dish that is flavoured and eaten with ground tea. And Lei cha cake is a house specialty of the cafe. It comes with edible gold flakes and minced nuts in the 3-layered cake . It tastes really like lei cha, not savoury nor sweet, and with similar flavour of ground tea. This unique cake is a must-try!

The homemade pistachio cheesecake is cheesy with light pistachio flavour and topped with nuts to give it a crunchy texture.

I will visit Bev C'afe again during a meal time to go for their main dishes.
