JB Buy: Yong Sheng Gift Shop (荣成礼坊) @ Taman Sri Tebrau

Yong Sheng Gift Shop (荣成礼坊), or confectionery, started in Muar in 1952 and specialises in wedding and full moon gift boxes with traditional pastries. The brand is well-known through out Malaysia and Singapore. Many Singaporeans used to travel to Muar to get their pastries.

Yong Sheng Gift Shop has several outlets in Johor Bahru, with the outlets in JB City Square Shopping Centre and Taman Sri Tebrau being the nearest to Singapore.

The Mui Tang Cai (or mei dong cai, pickled Chinese mustard) Teochew Delight (潮州梅冬菜劳饼) is a traditional Teochew pastry with fillings that is made with lotus, winter melon, sesame seeds, mei dong cai, etc. The unique savoury taste of pickled mustard infused in the sweet fillings give the pastry a mild sweet-savoury taste.

The Green Tea Red Bean Lava Pie (绿茶红豆流心酥) is an interesting pastry with soft layered skin that wrapped around its fillings. The fillings has 3-layers with the outer layer being red bean, followed by a mochi-like layer and green tea lava in the centre. It has rich flavours and varying textures.

The classic heong piah (香饼) — not the beh teh saw (马蹄酥) that are often named interchangeably — has low-sweetness fillings, made with maltose syrup, orange peel, sesame seeds, etc, in a crumbly soft crust. It is flavourful and not easy to stop eating after one piece, since it is mildly sweet.

Yong Sheng's Sun Cake (太阳饼) is a little smaller in size as compared to other sun cakes. It has a milky fragrance. The white lotus filling is added with milk, with reduced sugar, as it is not overly sweet too.

Yong Sheng Gift Shop's traditional pastries are not overly sweet and nice tasting. The nice-looking packagings make them great as gifts too.
