Kedai Kopi Heng Seng (兴成咖啡店) was located at a junction between Jalan Jenang and Jalan Sultanah in Batu Pahat town, Johor. The old-school coffee shop is housed in an old pre-war structure that is once a hotel called Hotel Cheong Wah (中华旅店).
The coffee shop has two sessions in a day, one in the early morning, closed in the afternoon, and one in the evening / night. This post is for the night session.
The menu (for night session) is mounted outside the coffee shop and listed all the items that are sold for the evening. There are traditional desserts such as red bean soup, green bean soup, tau suan, black glutinous rice and six-flavour peach gum dessert (六味甜汤) — commonly known as cheng tng (清汤) in Singapore. For main dishes, there are mee hoon kueh, fishball noodle, char siew noodle and economic noodle, kway teow and bee hoon.
The char siew noodle is served with slices of char siew (barbecue pork), mushrooms, greens, fried shallot garnish and meatballs in a bowl of soup. The thin and springy noodle is well-tossed in a dark sauce that has a pleasant mushroom flavour. It is a flavourful noodle dish and very cheap.
The tau suan, or mung bean dessert (豆爽), is not too sweet — a light and nice dessert to go for before bed.
Heng Seng is a cheap alternative for dining in the evening of Batu Pahat when most restaurants in the vicinity are closed for the day.
